Colombia sprays glyphosate

Yesterday Diego Garcia, the state prosecutor, presented at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, the dismissal of trial against Colombia by Ecuador established due to fumigations with glyphosate, that the country has carried out on the border since 2000 in order to destroy coca plantations.

According to a statement from the Attorney-there is an agreement between the governments of Ecuador and Colombia, which aims to build a “positive agenda to enable the sustainable development of the population of the border area, within the new framework that drives the relationship between the two countries, inspired by solidarity and cooperation.”

This past Wednesday night several social organizations of the border were called to Quito to meet with Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino.

The executive director of the Federation of Peasant Organizations Cord Border Lina Cahuasqui said that in the meeting, which lasted three hours: “We were told the terms of the agreement and the farmers requested that their demand principles be respected, but this was a meeting of consummated facts because in that moment the attorney dismissed the demand.”

According to the agreement, Cahuasqui say that in the first year Colombia will respect the 10-kilometer stretch of the border for their spraying. In the second year the space is reduced to five kilometers and the third to two.
