Ecuadorian Attorney General’s Brother Is Involved In Fiscal Mess
Galo García Carrión, brother of current Attorney General of the State in Ecuador, Diego Garcia, is one of 10 officials being investigated by the prosecution for alleged illegal handling of public funds in the EICA Company Industrial and Commercial Society.
Galo Garcia attributed the act as a prosecutor’s error and said: “I am mentioned as an officer, but I was never a EICA officer, I was an outside counsel that used to provide professional services when they consulted me.”
The prosecution also requested the Comptroller General of the State to make an audit of the ten officials to “determine direct, indirect, administrative, civil, and criminal responsibilities.”
The company, seized from the Isaias’ brothers, received $ 30 million from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works for the delivery of road equipment, on December of 2009, where EICA hired some of the machinery to CASE Corporation in Latin America for $ 11 million. However, according to a preliminary investigation in an “inexplicable and unjustifiable way, EICA transferred $ 477,294to Z Group; 30% of the value of the contract ($ 1.5 million).”
The Attorney´s brother, who provided services to EICA on behalf the law firm García Feraud and Sons, said he signed the contract as outside counsel of this company in November of that year, recommended by Oscar Gamarra, former agent of EICA and the person that signed the contract with MTOP. He also clarified that the current attorney general did not know that he worked for EICA.
