Eight presidential candidates are registered for the elections

Posted On 14 Jun 2023

Las inscripciones de candidatos presidenciales y a la Asamblea concluyeron la noche de este martes 13. Estos binomios aún se pueden “caer” o cambiar durante la verificación de requisitos y prohibiciones, o con recursos en el TCE.

Eight presidential candidates emerged from the internal democracy processes for these elections in August 2023.

The deadline for the registration of candidacies for the August 2023 elections ended on June 13, 2023 at midnight. With this, the presidential candidates who enter the verification process of requirements and prohibitions in the National Electoral Council (CNE) are confirmed.

Between May 25 and June 10, political organizations defined their presidential and Assembly candidates in their internal democracy processes. According to the CNE, this body provided technical assistance in 165 internal democracy processes: 12 national and 153 provincial.

The applicants, after their proclamation, had to personally go to the CNE to accept their candidacies, as part of the registration process. In the case of presidential candidacies, this step culminated on the afternoon of June 12.

In accordance with the tight electoral schedule set by the CNE for these elections, the official list of candidacies will be complete by August 6.

Eight presidential candidates

Eight presidential candidates and their running mates have already been appointed in the internal democracy processes of the political organizations and registered with the CNE until Tuesday night.

In total, the eight pairs designated in internal democracy processes were also registered with the CNE.

Xavier Hervas and Luz Marina Vega

The last to accept his candidacy for these elections was Xavier Hervas , who was designated as a presidential candidate during the primaries of the RETO movement (formerly Podemos, led by Paúl Carrasco).

Hervas and his running mate, Luz Marina Vega, arrived at the CNE on the afternoon of this June 12, 2023.

He was also a presidential candidate in 2021, for the Democratic Left; he got fourth place. After internal struggles within that political organization, he announced his separation from it.

    Yaku Perez and Nory Pineda

The presidential candidate of the ‘Claro que se puede’ alliance, Yaku Pérez, and his running mate, Nory Pineda, came on June 12, 2023 to accept his candidacy.

This pairing will be sponsored by the alliance between Popular Unity, the Ecuadorian Socialist Party and Democracia Sí.

Pineda ‘s name was only confirmed in this act, despite the fact that Pérez’s candidacy had already been made official weeks before.

Yaku Pérez also has the backing of Pachakutik , which failed to join the Claro que se puede alliance. After leaving the CNE, the candidate went to the Pachakutik headquarters, where he met with the coordinator of the movement, Marlon Santi.

Pérez was president of the Ecuarunari and then presidential candidate for Pachakutik in 2021 , when he obtained third place. After the elections, he separated from Pachakutik, although that political force tried -unsuccessfully- to support his candidacy for these elections.

    Jan Topic and Diana Jacome

Jan Topic accepted his presidential candidacy on June 6, 2023, during the internal democracy process of the Social Christian Party (PSC). However, he did it alone, without defining who would be his running mate.

The name of who will accompany Topic on the ballot was made official two days later, on June 8. The television presenter Diana Jácome will complete her pairing.

These candidacies will be sponsored by the alliance ‘Por un Pais Sin Miedo’, made up of the PSC, the Patriotic Society and the Democratic Center.

Topic is a Guayaquil businessman with no previous political experience who promotes his time in the Army in Europe. He is the son of Tomislav Topic, from Telconet.

    Luisa González and Andrés Arauz

On June 10, 2023, during the Revolución Ciudadana convention, Luisa González and Andrés Arauz accepted their candidacies before a CNE delegate in Manabí.

In that event, Correísmo confirmed that they were their letters for these elections, after former Vice President Jorge Glas declined his candidacy.

Revolución Ciudadana will participate without alliances in these presidential elections.

Luisa González is one of the correísta assembly members dismissed with the decree of the cross death. Before, she held various positions in the government of former President Rafael Correa, including Vice Minister of Labor.

González is the only female candidate for the Presidency who is currently confirmed on the August 2023 ballot.

    Otto Sonnenholzner and Erika Paredes

On June 10, 2023, the pairing made up of Otto Sonnenholzner and Érika Paredes accepted their candidacy at the CNE facilities in Quito. The couple registered under the auspices of the Actuemos alliance , approved by the CNE the same day.

The alliance is made up of the SUMA and Avanza parties; finally, despite the fact that a faction of the Democratic Left had announced that it would join, they were left out of this candidacy.

Sonnenholzner was one of the last to confirm that he would be a candidate , despite the fact that his name had been heard since the sectional elections last February. Since that election, people close to him were already close to SUMA , as is the case of Pedro Pablo Duart, who was a candidate for mayor of Guayaquil for that political force.

Despite being close to SUMA, Sonnenholzner has said that he has no political affiliation. Between 2018 and 2020, he was vice president of Lenín Moreno; however, he was never close to Alianza PAIS (today Mover).

    Fernando Villavicencio and Andrea González

On the morning of June 10, 2023, the pair made up of former assemblyman Fernando Villavicencio and Andrea González approached the National Electoral Council (CNE), in Quito, to accept the registration of their presidential candidacy.

The couple registered under the auspices of the Construye movement , formerly called Rupture, led by the former Minister of Government, María Paula Romo.

Former assemblyman Villavicencio was the first to confirm his presidential candidacy, after the decree of the cross death .

Villavicencio is a political activist, journalist and former trade unionist, who came to the Assembly in 2021 at the hands of the Honesty alliance, formed between the extinct Concertación movement and the Socialist Party . This alliance promoted the presidential candidacy of César Montúfar in 2021.

    Bolivar Armijos and Linda Romero

On the morning of Thursday, June 8, 2023, the pairing made up of Bolívar Armijos and Linda Romero, approached the National Electoral Council (CNE), in Quito, to accept the registration of their presidential candidacy.

The couple registered under the auspices of the Amigo movement, founded by former assemblyman Daniel Mendoza, who was sentenced for a corruption case. In the 2021 general elections, this movement promoted the candidacy of Pedro Freile, who later separated from this political organization.

Armijos was president of the Council of Parochial Governments (Conagopare) during the government of former President Rafael Correa, to whom he remained very close. Armijos even went so far as touting himself as a possible running mate for Correa in a previous election.

But at the beginning of 2023, in the sectional elections, he was one of the main promoters of the candidacy of Nicolás Lapentti for the Guayas Prefecture, which was launched with the PID, Patriotic Society and Friend movements.

    Daniel Noboa and Veronica Abad

Daniel Noboa and his running mate Verónica Abad were the first couple to accept their candidacy in the CNE. Both will participate with the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) alliance , the name of the local movement that Noboa promotes, but has not yet been able to register with the CNE.

The process took place one day after the CNE approved this alliance, made up of the movements People, Equality and Democracy (PID, of former President Lenin Moreno’s cousin) and Mover (formerly Alianza PAIS).

Noboa had presented his presidential candidacy several days ago. However, he remained silent after his father, businessman and former presidential candidate Álvaro Noboa, announced in a video that he would run again in these elections. The video was later removed from social media.

Daniel Noboa was an assembly member for the United Ecuadorian movement since 2021, and was dismissed with the declaration of the cross death. Verónica Abad was a candidate for Mayor of Cuenca in 2023, for the Amigo movement.

The following steps

Once the candidates are registered, the CNE must check that they meet the requirements and are not subject to any prohibition. If this is the case, political organizations have a deadline to change applicants .

Appeals can also be filed before the Electoral Contentious Tribunal.

According to the adjusted electoral calendar, the official calendar of the candidacies must be ready by August 6. With this, you can start the job of printing the ballot papers.

At the moment, the only qualified presidential candidacy is that of Daniel Noboa.

This news was originally published on June 2, 2023; updated on June 10 and 12 with the acceptance of more applications, and on June 14, 2023 with the closure of registrations.
