El Universo Cassation Hearing is Still Pending

According to judge Gerardo Morales, the trial against El Universo newspaper will not be performed today. Yesterday judge Luis Quiroz, president of the 2nd Criminal Chamber of the National Court of Justice, stated that the trial was scheduled for today.

The case was about to be solved, but the defense of the newspaper devised a strategy to prolong the process. Their objective is to have the new National Court solve the case.

President Correa attorney, Alembert Vera, stated that a notification must be presented to the court in order to suspend the trial, and it still has not been made.

However temporary judge Morales explained that such action was not necessary since the “Civil Code and the Organic Code of the Judicial Function states that once they have been challenged, judges competition is suspended and no hearing can be performed.” (AV)
