Fashion looks for the ethical treatment of leather
One of the main concerns about the fashion industry worldwide is the impact of it on social and environmental matters. The leather and footwear sector in Ecuador seeks to join to become more competitive and thereby it wants to start a tour from the livestock breeding.
Ximena Alban, president in charge of the National Association of Tanners of Ecuador, says they have worked with the Ministry of Industry and Productivity (Mipro) to give a better life quality to livestock, which will be reflected in the quality of leather. Barbed wires and the presence of insects not only cause suffering to the animal; they also damage the skin.
Agroquality is one of the public institutions that have been involved. It is currently working in the dissemination of voluntary guidelines for animal welfare, which are consistent with those of the World Organisation for Animal Health.
