For the opposition, Correa announcements are ‘smokescreens’
The day after the Assembly approved a package of constitutional amendments, which generated a strong social polarization, President Rafael Correa announced he will support a new change to the Constitution. Three days later, during the solemn session on the occasion of the foundation Quito, he said he will send the draft inheritance and capital gains laws to the Assembly.
After the 2014 regional elections the ruling party suffered a political setback and one of the strategies to regain control was to impose an agenda with topics such as the amendments or the capital gains and inheritance laws. Inner voices that called for reserves confirmed that if they did not, they ran the risk of ending up with an agenda imposed by the opposition. Now groups like Pachakutik, Creo or Avanza recognize that this was a political plot.
