Former Mayor of N.Y., Rudolph Giuliani, Shared Experiences in Ecuador

Posted On 15 Jun 2012

Mayor of Guayaquil City, Jaime Nebot with Rudolph Giuliani

Yesterday former mayor of New York during the attacks of September 11, 2001, shared his experiences in Guayaquil on how to handle with this crisis, reducing the rate of people dependent on state aid and how he did you make that city reduce the rates of crime that were taking away tourism and investment.

More than 500 people attended his lecture: “Leadership in times of change and crisis,” Giuliani talked for almost an hour more about the leadership principles that helped him to address these problems. The event was organized by Corpei and advertising agency Maruri.

The former mayor recalled that when he became the mayor of New York more than 1 million people were receiving government assistance. And that led him to adopt a principle: ‘If you want to continue receiving assistance must work for it’. So he had a percentage of those people to clean the streets and other tasks. He said people do not need handouts, but incentives to work.

Giuliani, who received the keys to the city of Guayaquil from mayor Jaime Nebot said that leadership starts with a goal. He further argued that optimism and preparation are a requisite to accomplish goals.

Giuliani said that a leader must be optimistic and find solutions when he faces adversity. “People follows those who are problem solvers,” he added. (FL)
