Posted On 24 Apr 2014
An ammonia leak occurred yesterday in the port of Manta at 08:00 on the Marginal Wharf. The event left as result four dead, four people with serious burns and thirty-two affected by the gas.
The accident occurred inside of the tuna boat, Betty Elizabeth (260 tons), product of the explosion of a pipe. At that time, about forty employees of the discharge crew were in the fishing room waiting to disembark the tuna.
Marco Loor (26), survivor, recalled that `nobody in the Port of the Unit’s Relief came to help until the firefighters came´.
About hundred and twenty members of the fire brigade, police, Navy, relief personnel, and a police helicopter attended the emergency. The port was closed for four hours while the victims were evacuated to the hospitals Rodriguez Zambrano, IESS and El Sol Clinic, that were overcrowded with families, seeking news.
