Francisco Ycaza Hospital officials were called to testify by Prosecutor
This morning, Margarita Neira, Prosecutor for Crimes against Life, asked to call Patricia Parrales, Director of Children’s Hospital Francisco Ycaza Bustamante and Ricardo Alcívar, Head of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for intentional murder in Neonatal case.
The prosecutor said that when the situation about infection by the bacterium Serratia Marcenses in the NICU of the hospital became known, “Parrales was obliged to take preventive measures and she did not do it.” She also indicated that Alcívar, head of the NICU, “did not informed in time of the outbreak and did not prevent new patient revenue.” That makes him “responsible for not preventing the spread of Serratia.”
This bacterium caused the deaths of at least five babies from eleven infants who were born in this hospital between February 3 and March 20, 2011.
This part of the report, which said that doctors, nurses and cleaning staff testified understaffing, overcrowding and poor cleanliness problems in the hospital, was presented during the reading of the opinion of the Prosecutor in the Third Court of Criminal Guarantees.
