Garbage will generate electricity in Ecuador
Ecuador will have its first cogeneration power plant that needs 1200 tons of organic and inorganic waste to generate 30 megawatts of electricity daily.
The project is aimed to be built within 20 months in Quininde, province of Esmeraldas, in the Ecuadorian Coastal Region, for which the council has already signed the construction contract with the Korean company Star Group. A similar plan is underway in the Urcuquí county, in the province of Ibarra, in the northern mountain range.
70 hectares are required to execute this project that includes a processing unit (for waste burning), which is expected to incinerate garbage under 2000 degrees Celsius.
Quininde mayor Manuel Casanova said that the Star Group investment is USD 150 million and the counterpart of the municipality is to provide the necessary terrains and garbage for the operation of the plant.
