Government removes security from Correa and Glas

Posted On 23 May 2018

Ecuadornews:

The National Secretary of Communication has reported that the National Government has decided to withdraw the personal security of former President Rafael Correa, his family, and former Vice President Jorge Glas (in prison for corruption).

According to the Secretariat, following the recommendations generated by the Ministry of Defense, following prior consultation with the National Intelligence Secretariat, it was resolved:

“Withdrawing the security provided to former President Rafael Correa and his close relatives in their countries of residence due to the low level of risk.”

In addition, “security is removed to former Vice President Jorge Glas inside and outside prison 4, where he is serving his sentence of imprisonment.”

Days before Moreno took office as president of Ecuador on May 24, 2017, Correa through Executive Decree 1369 provided that the state security for former presidents be extended for one year and for ex vice presidents six months. (I)
