Indigenous people of the East in vigil for the Yasuní
Yesterday, the Confederation of indigenous nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (Confeniae) declared themselves in a state of alert and vigil at the announcement that the President of Ecuador, made last Thursday, of proceeding with the exploitation of oil in an area equivalent to one per thousand of the Yasuní National Park.
“… the survival of the peoples in voluntary isolation is at stake, we are at the doors of a new ethnocide by the government and in response, from every corner of the Amazon, indigenous nationalities will be vigilant for our territory, main legacy for the environmental balance at global level for present and future generations”, said this group, which brings together 21 organizations and federations of 11 Amazonian nationalities.
“Currently, the Tagaeri and Taromenane are being exterminated in the rise of a so-called citizen revolution”. He said that according to historical data, 40 years ago, the Tetete people were exterminated with the start of oil activity in the northeastern sector of Ecuador.
The Group also rejected that while it was decided to exploit the Yasuni, declared biosphere of the world, the Constitution is being proclaimed as the most advanced in the world for recognizing the collective rights of indigenous peoples, in particular, their right to free consultation, the rights of nature, Sumak Kawsay, among others.
