Jaime Nebot: “If the amendments are adopted, I will ignore them”
Posted On 03 Dec 2015
Guayaquil Mayor Jaime Nebot warned Wednesday that if the National Assembly approves the constitutional amendments, his administration will be in contempt of them because he believes that the process is unconstitutional.
He said this during a radio address in which he assured that if the legislature gives way to reforms: “I will not ignore them because the Constitution commands me to not obey; what has no legal force does not oblige, because it goes against the Constitution.”
The Guayaquil Mayor thus refers to the amendments promoted by the ruling party Alianza PAIS: “16 constitutional reforms and a great violation of the Constitution, a great offense to the people and democracy. This is how I summarize it.”
