Ecuadornews:
Legal expert Jorge Zavala Egas, who was the defense of part of the defendants in the case called New Atardecer, said yesterday they have no relation with those prosecuted for gold trading between Guayaquil and Miami.
Zavala clarified that the process carried out in Guayaquil is completely different and unrelated to that of Miami.
In Guayaquil, he said, a verdict was passed on May 15, seven of the eight defendants were sentenced to 11 months in prison and a fine of $ 100,000. However, one person was declared innocent: Jordi M. G.
Currently, the defense of brothers Alberto and Javier M. and the rest of the defendants (César C., Gustavo J., Daniel N. J., Fernando R. C. and Harry C. A.) expect to be sentenced to appeal, he added.
The problem is that the judges of that court were suspended for ninety days and therefore, the sentence could not be executed. The Prosecutor’s Office, which allegedly accuses them of selling gold of illegal origin, smuggling, and tax evasion, says that a new hearing must be held to resubmit the evidence.
According to Zavala Egas, all the defendants should be free, since the eleven months of detention have been completed. (I)
