Las Monjas Ave. Bridge Will Not Be Delivered in October

Works for the reparation of the bridge over Las Monjas avenue, in Urdesa, have been carried out since it collapsed on December 6th, 2010 due to a rupture of the rock surface where its structure rested; however, the works have stalled three months since the builders require signing a new contract.
City spokesmen claim that the work will not be delivered in October this year, as it was originally planned, but in February 2012.
The bridge structure was installed by Franki Piles contractor. At the beginning of the work, the company spokesmen said non of the costs were going to increase. He also promissed not to delay works.
Mario Avila, company executive, said the works have not been entirety suspended. “In order to avoid demolishing the bridge, we will need to sign a new contract with the City,” he said.
Jorge Barrezueta, director of the Department of Public Works and City Council spokesman said that in the coming days a supplementary agreement would be signed to resume works in March. He added that the new works will cost $ 950,000–$ 341,000 more than the initial price–.
Once the bridge is ready, Guayaquil Siglo XXI Foundation will develop the urban regeneration in the area.
