Lawyers on Chevron case ask for an invalidation of Judge Kaplan’s sentence
Steven Donziger, one of the legal representatives of Ecuadorians suing Chevron over environmental damage in the South American country, has appealed the judgment of American justice, issued by the Manhattan federal judge Lewis Kaplan.
In its judgment delivered on last March 4, kaplan sentenced Donzinger for allegedly having conspired with an Ecuadorian judge to get a conviction against oil company Chevron.
On his behalf in a letter released last Tuesday, Donziger accused Kaplan of agreeing with Chevron and of making mistakes in accepting the testimony of corrupt witnesses, ignoring scientific evidence and unlawfully interfere with the final decision of the Supreme Court of another country.
For its part in a statement, Chevron spokesman James Craig, noted that Donziger and his associates were found guilty “of racketeering, extortion, money laundering, wire fraud, violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, witness tampering and obstruction of justice, in order to obtain the Ecuadorian judgment against Chevron (..) are sure that the judgment against Donziger, his legal team and its partners, will be ratified.”
