Low homicide rate according to Interior Ministry
According to what the Government anticipated, Ecuador will end 2015 with an official rate of six homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.
Interior Minister Jose Serrano, through his Twitter account, pointed out that in conformity with the data available until July, it can be already ” foreseen” that the country will reach its lowest homicide record in recent years.
Last month there were 73 cases compared to the 82 in 2014 and 144 in 2013, according to a statistical table presented by the minister.
Supported by an acclaimed security strategy, Ecuador last year reached a rate of 7.2 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, the lowest in the last 20 years.
With the official projection of yesterday, the country would rank among the safest in Latin America, behind Chile (4.6 per 100,000) and Cuba (5 per 100,000), and ahead of Costa Rica (8, 5 per 100,000), according to figures released in December by the World Health Organization (WHO).
