Low revenues affects the Ecuadorian TV
The country’s economic slowdown threatens the growth of domestic production, which in recent years has maintained on screen programs like Combate, Ecuador has Talent or En carne propia (in the flesh). The president of the Association of Private Television Channels, Carlos Coello, warns that the development of this type of content might be affected before the reduction of advertising revenues. The Communication Act, however, requires that 60% of what is broadcast must be locally produced.
Last month representatives of various media analyzed the situation that Coello does not call crisis but slowdown, thus, he cites data of advertising revenues registered by the channels that are members of the Association. In 2013, this sector recorded sales by $ 220 million. In 2014, $ 211 million. And, in 2015 it is estimated they would close the year with $ 190 million.
The program manager at Ecuavisa, Karina Medina, when asked by daily El Universo, recognized that the economic situation affects all sectors, but she clarified that in the case of that television station, local production will be favored. “We will focus on developing family entertainment content that satisfy our audience,” she added.
