Machalilla today reminds its 136 years of parish organization, in the middle of the joy of being a village with renowned national and international tourist aspect, but also with the internal claims by the lack of public works and the abandonment of its authorities.
Located at the Center of the Ecuadorian coast, in Southern Manabi, it has a population of almost 5,000 inhabitants. 90% of its territory is part of Parque Nacional Machalilla. Los Frailes beaches, Islote Sucre, Los Ciriales, stand out among other tourist attractions. The majority of its inhabitants are dedicated to fishing and seafood trade.
However,it is a community whose tourism represents incomes, “but it is very low the level of what local authorities have done to improve the living standards here,” say people such as Gabriel Romero, a young inhabitant of the place.
“In part, we also have the blame, because we don’t demand that progress of our people”, he admits, pointing out that many people are satisfied with the money that enters in high seasons and do not work for the sake of the community.
