More than 30 lawyers defend the detainees of the marches
More than 30 lawyers from 15 organizations are closely following the cases of demonstrators arrested on 13 and 17 August in the marches in several provinces.
Some assumed the legal defense, others are doing the legal analysis of standards and others the international monitoring and coordination. They belong to organizations that defend human rights, the lawyers guild of Pichincha, groups of environmental advocacy, indigenous groups, among others.
Harold Burbano, legal adviser of the Conaie, defends four people in Quito and coordinates with legal experts who took the processes. It should be noted that Burbano receives no pay.
There are 15 organizations that monitor these cases closely. For example, the Centre for Human Rights of the Catholic University works in conjunction with international organizations. Its coordinator, Mario Melo, said that one of the results of this work was the pronouncement of the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations (UN).
