Mount Merapi Claimed 44 Lives
JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) – This Thursday, Mount Merapi a volcano in Indonesia emitted a cloud of gas and ashes followed by powerful eruptions on the sky. Authorities informed that five people died because of the disasters.
Hot clouds of ash floated over Java Central; rising over 2.5 kilometer’s afterwards it moved to the south towards Kali Gendol, Kali Kuning, Kali Krasak and Kali Bedok according the Indonesian Agency for Volcanoes and Geological Disaster Mitigation.
The lava and ashes of Mount Merapi has claimed 44 lives, leaving dozens of injured since his activity began on October 26. Over 75 thousand civilians have been evacuated from the premises, informed the Indonesian National Council of Administration of Disasters; Sutopo Purwo Nugroho did the report. Many of the locals had to evacuate on several occasions due to the common eruptions on the sector.
Because of the rains, the geologists have warned the people that it’s not safe to get close to the volcano vicinity or any river, since the rain can turn the ashes into mudslides.
The Mount Merapi is located at 3,000 meters of height, being characterized for its unpredictability. In 1994 it killed over 60 villagers.
