Mujica requests to US. release Cuban prisoners
Posted On 22 Mar 2014
The Uruguayan President José Mujica revealed yesterday that in Exchange for receiving prisoners from Guantanamo, at the request of the United States, he called on Washington to release Cuban prisoners accused of spying in that country.
“It is a request for a human rights issue,” said the President, who warned however: “I do not do free favors, step ballot” . Mujica announcement was received with scepticism by opposition and doubts by local jurists, who wondered under what conditions the prisoners would come.
Located at a base under US administration, Washington rent to Cuba since 1903, Guantanamo is a symbol of the excesses of the war on terrorism.
