Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on 2 August, that the Army will continue the operation in Gaza “to achieve the goals” and will reorganize its forces in Gaza, “according to security needs” of Israel.
In a television broadcast at the seat of the Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said that his Government does not abandon the military operation that launched on July 8, but “after completing the destruction of tunnels” he will “exclusively” be guided according to safety principles, which have been interpreted as an upcoming withdrawal of forces.
“We promised we would remand calm to the Israeli population, no matter how much time is needed nor what means we must use”, he said without a clear announcement about whether Israeli forces will withdraw from Gaza in the coming days or whether to send a delegation to El Cairo to negotiate a ceasefire with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.
