New Investigations in the General Attorney Contest were Opened
Gustavo Benítez, current Ecuadorian prosecutor, decided to open a preliminary investigation on the Attorney General contest taking into account the complaint made by Elsa Moreno, a candidate for the post. Members of the Citizens Commission in charge of the selection of the Attorney General are under investigation.
According to Moreno, “the Citizens Commission is working with indifference towards certain contestants and in a contrary manner to others” and says that this fact has been seen throughout the hole selection process. One example was the involvement of the merit ratings and written tests, which she claims to have caused her a “serious damage to her reputation as an specialized professional in criminal matters.”
On the other hand, Assemblyman Cléver Jimenez filed a complaint against the attorney candidate Galo Chiriboga.
Jimenez queried three certificates allegedly provided by the American Association of Jurists and merits attached by Chiriboga as his merits signed by Marco Navas as Secretary of the Association. According to the research made by the assemblyman, Navas did not hold the post as Secretary of the Association when these signatures were made.
The irregularity, as indicated, is that the certificates were conferred “in pages with a letterhead imitation of the “American Association of Jurists” and a footnote with the address of Chiriboga’s law firm. Another irregularity is the alleged concealment of his property affidavit presented to hold the post of ambassador of Ecuador in Spain.
