Not everything will be duty-free in the EU
Posted On 09 Apr 2016
Exceptions are applied more to food and agriculture than to industry. This also affects European imports.
The headlines were very ambitious and expectations were maximized. With the accession protocol of Ecuador to the trade agreement of the European Union (EU), Peru and Colombia, exceptions to the total liberalization of Ecuador’s exports going to Europe are known. Industrial goods will be introduced into the territory of the 28 countries without tariffs from day one, but exceptions mostly affect agricultural and food products, which are the pillars of national exports. In some cases, the tariff will be maintained for several years. In others, the base rate or the EU impose safeguards.
The protocol of accession of Ecuador sets the tariff table for banana exports to the European Union. In addition, fishing tariffs will be exonerated by 100% and industrial sales by 99.9%. However, food and agricultural products are those that have more specifications for liberalization, considering they are the strongest export item of Ecuador. Industrial sales, however, will pay zero duty since the entry into force of the agreement (I).
