The National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Organization of American States (OAS) signed an agreement on Tuesday, November 12 for an Electoral Observation Mission to monitor the local elections on 23 February.

The agreements made are related to the privileges and immunities of the observers during their work in Ecuador.

Jose Miguel Insulza, General Secretary of the OAS, appointed the Mexican politician Lazaro Cardenas Batel as Chief of Mission in Ecuador. In the coming months will meet with officials of the regime, electoral authorities and actors in the electoral process.

Insulza stressed that the goal of the visit is to “begin its work observing the process and made themselves available to assist in achieving a successful electoral process.”
