Patiño: OAS Headquarters must be settled in a signatory country of the San Jose Pact
During the 44th meeting of the Organization of American States on economic development with social inclusion, Ecuador recommended that the organism leaves its permanent headquarters in Washington.
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño said during his participation in the session that “the reality has changed and organizations must also adapt to changes.”
He further specified that the OAS should promote “a comprehensive space on human rights in which individuals and organizations can rely against abuses of states, but also abuses of media powers and transnational corporations.”
He also claimed the validity of the San Jose de Costa Rica Pact, a commitment for the promotion and respect of human rights, but regretted that the United States has not yet signed it.
Thus, he nsisted that the permanent headquarters of the OAS in Washington “are installed on a signatory country of the San Jose Pact”.
