People Wore Purple to Support Spirit Day
Posted On 21 Oct 2010
Hundreds of people wore purple yesterday to support the Spirit day cause.
Purple symbolizes ‘spirit’ on the rainbow flag—the pride symbol for LGBT community— that was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978.
Thousands of LGBT youth face pressures and bullying. Spirit Day honors the teenagers who committed suicide in recent weeks due to homophobic abuse.
Millions of social media users around the world encouraged Spirit Day. Facebook pages were created. One of the event’s Facebook pages said: “This event is not a seminar nor is it a rally. There is NO meeting place. All you have to do is wear purple.”
Twitter users turned their profile pictures purple to show their support as well.
