He no longer ignores politics, he rather speaks of it. Jefferson Pérez, an Ecuadorian athlete and world record-holder who won Ecuador’s only Olympic medal, resumed last year his position at the International Athletics Federation and the South American Confederation, with a new vision of developing several projects. Even so, he continues to see sports with great aspirations.
– Local elections are approaching (2019). Did you open the doors to politics?
Yes. If the possibility arrives, I will do it trying to commit the least possible number of errors. Maybe that’s why I’ve delayed. I have had invitations from the political opposition and the government party and for me that is flattering because it means that I have something to share and that I do not fit into either side. Maybe when I join one of the parties the rival will hate me and that’s what I’m still preparing for.
“What has Jefferson done?”
– We have the ‘Project 10-10’ which is not yet implemented, but we are going to present it to the Government.
– What is it?
– It is a 10-year planning, and 10 Olympic medals aim. Today the Government allocates $ 12 million for High-Performance athletes, and our project only costs 10 million (10% less per year). The problem is that government terms do not last 10 years, so this would no longer be a matter of government, but of State. After those 10 years, there will be a base of 100 athletes with a view to the process of the next decade.
– How and when was it born?
– How and when was it born?
– The project was prepared after the Rio Olympic Games (August) and was ready in February of this year.
– Will it be accepted?
– It’s a medium-term project. I do not know if the authorities want to give up the immediate investment position.
