Pinera’s Speech Causes Riots in Chile

Demonstrations in Valparaiso
In Valparaiso, Chile more than 8,000 people protested against the talks of the Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, in the Congress. Yesterday the riots and the confrontations with the police left two officers wounded and dozens of detained.
Demonstrations were called by the Unitary Central of Workers (CUT for its Spanish Acronym) in demand of better salaries. More than 300 hundred of hooded civilians caused disasters in public space, they also attacked two fireman departments and faced the police until they were dispersed by riflemen.
An unknown number of demonstrators were detained after the riots. The general of the riflemen, Richard Quezada, stated that the Special Forces that guard the Congress waited 80 minutes, while several elements fell on them after being launched by the demonstrators.
Pinera said that it is unfair to give free education to higher classes. He guaranteed “access to quality education with a scholarships and credits system.” (AV)
