After a meeting with Cenace, the Ministry of Energy agreed that there will be no power outages in Ecuador at least until the first half of January 2024.
After a meeting of the Crisis Committee, the Minister of Energy, Andrea Arrobo, announced on December 29 that power outages are suspended in Ecuador until January 15, 2024.
This decision is made after a technical analysis that determined better conditions of the electrical system, especially in the reservoirs of the hydroelectric plants.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the improvement in the energy situation is attributed to efficient management of electricity by the current administration, and also to the favorable weather conditions of recent days.
Cuenca, for example, where the area of influence of the main hydroelectric plants is located, ended its hydrological drought on December 27.
For now, the Crisis Committee, in charge of Cenace, Celec and the industry Portfolio, indicated that they continue to evaluate the energy situation, which began at the end of October 2023 with the first national blackouts.
And they clarified that the crisis has not ended, so “the dry season will last until the first quarter of 2024 and will be repeated next September.”
For this reason, Minister Arrobo reiterated that it is imperative to approve the so-called Energy Law, which is being discussed in the Assembly.
In this project sent by the Government to the Legislature, the creation of the Energy Efficiency Fund is proposed, which will be financed by allocations from the fiscal budget and resources from international cooperation.
