Presidential campaign in Uruguay was closed
Candidates for the President of Uruguay closed on Thursday a campaign with different mood: the leftist president Tabaré Vázquez had all the odds in his favor, while Luis Lacalle Pou center tried his last chances.
Three days before the runoff election that will define the successor of José Mujica, all the polls predicted a comfortable victory of Vázquez (from the ruling party) on the National Party candidate, Lacalle Pou: one which would win with between 52% and 55% and the second from 37% to 40% of the vote.
This would be an early victory after the results of the first round on October 26, in which Vazquez won with 47.8% of the vote, which gave him the majority in the Chamber of Deputies, leaving Lacalle Pou (30 9%) responsible for leading an opposition bloc weakened after the performance of its traditional ally, fellow center-Colorado Party (12.9%).
During the election campaign, Vazquez gave no interviews and went through the countryside on a “thank you”tour, while Lacalle Pou demanded a debate that was not given and warned that a new period of the ruling Frente Amplio (FA) will bring increased taxes.
