Protests against Lenín Moreno convulse the hyper center of Quito

Posted On 05 Apr 2017
Thousands of people have staged protests since last night at the hyper center of Quito (the surroundings of the National Electoral Council). Several corners have been taken by the protesters, who chanted slogans against the electoral fraud, hours after the National Electoral Council proclaimed winner the ruling party candidate Lenin Moreno.

On Monday, opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso called on the protesters to return home and promised them that he would take the relevant legal actions once the results are proclaimed. The challenge will be filed Wednesday morning.

But on Tuesday night several of the street intersections are closed by young people who set up campfires.

Dozens of military trucks have occupied the back streets. Army officers patrol the streets. A hundred police agents have surrounded the CNE with barricades, and have tried to isolate the protesters, but people are finding ways to advance and occupy the streets. The candidate for the vice presidency Andres Paez spoke in front of the supporters on a platform set up in front of the CNE. A dozen of speakers has passed through that same platform.
