Rafael Correa confirms his retirement from politics for “a good time”

The president of Ecuador Rafael Correa confirmed he will retire for “a good time” from politics, without turning down the possibility of a future participation. As part of his activities in France, Correa told a public media about his intention of not embarking on a re-election in 2017.

“My plan is, at least in the short term, to retire at least for a moment, and for a good time from political life,” he said in an interview with Radio France Internationale, on Tuesday.

Correa reiterated yesterday that he was ready to run for elections in 2017, but as the opposition is “so fragmented” he does not believe it necessary. He explained that this is the reason he asked his legislative bloc to include a temporary amendment for reelection.

 

“It’s time to spend some time in Belgium,” he told the radio, referring to the homeland of his wife and where, in addition, he owns an apartment. Correa continues his activities in France. Yesterday, at a ceremony, he received a doctorate honoris causa from the Claude Bernard University of Lyon.
