Rafael Correa says that election campaign ‘will be very dirty’
Posted On 17 Jan 2016
The call to be alert to an election campaign that will be “dirty” and to refute criticism from the opposition were some of the points repeated during the celebration of the ninth anniversary of the presidency of Rafael Correa, carried out yesterday in the Samanes Park.
During his speech, Vice President Jorge Glas began listing the changes in health and investment in hydroelectric plants, he then noted that this “new wealth” is that “they want to hide,” referring to the opposition.
When the president began his speech, at about 11:50, references of the opposition multiplied.
After mentioning how deeply moved he was by the videos of his travels and greeting the activists of his party, he referred to the Inheritance and Capital Gains bills, which were removed from the Assembly before the arrival of Pope Francis.
He also took advantage of the occasion to defend the constitutional amendments. He said these were “socialized” all over the country and only served to extend the rights of citizens.
Before concluding his speech, which lasted about 52 minutes, he referred to the 2017 elections and said that those who represent the Ecuadorian people shall “defend the achievements of the revolution.” For the president, “progress such as the Communications Law can not go backwards, not even a milimeter.”
He said that “the electoral campaign will be very dirty.” “As they can not accuse us, they can only defame us,” referring to accusations of corruption in the ruling party or by being called new rich. (I)
