Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa would address a letter to his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, by the recent pronouncement of a State Department spokesman in Washington regarding the press freedom in the country and the situation of three journalists.

“My country is sovereign, we are not a colony of anyone. We will respond with dignity to such insolence,” said Correa local Esmeraldas half last Thursday, according to AFP.

“We are preparing a letter of Carondelet, telling the White House that we also ask that you protect the life of the soldier Bradley Manning (who is in jail for leaking documents to WikiLeaks) and the Guantanamo prisoners,” said Correa.

On Wednesday, the spokesman for the U.S. State Department, Patrick Ventrell urged the Ecuadorian Government to “support freedom of the press as a vital component of a democratic society and to ensure that journalists can operate without fear or threat of retaliation.“
