Reform to the COIP begins to be processed
The draft amendments to the Integral Criminal Code (COIP for its Spanish acronym), sent last July 14 by the Executive, in order to define the offenses against intellectual property, begins to be processed in the Judiciary Committee of the Assembly.
The text proposes that the crime of trademark counterfeiting and harmful copyright piracy is punishable. For these faults it suggests to impose fines from $ 500 to $ 500,000.
Marcela Aguiñaga (AP) and Luis Fernando Torres (PSC-Cambio) noted that the writing should be improved.
The debate will extend in the coming weeks. Mauro Andino (AP), President of the Commission, said on Wednesday he may request the attendance of Alexis Mera, Legal Secretary of the Presidency, and the principal of the Ecuadorian Institute of Intellectual Property (IEPI for its Spanish acronym).
