Sanctions on Banana companies raise controversy
Santions to six medium size banana exporters for the alleged failure to acquire 15% of their volume from associations of small producers made it clear one more problem in this sector, the one that generates more foreign exchange in the non-state economy.
On the one hand, there is an obstacle for exporters: logistics. Sending trucks, qualification personnel and other staff to the farms to embark very small amounts of fruit.
That is the justification for exporters to not buy fruit from small producers. Although this segment source explained that eventually the disadvantage that meant the temporary closure of exporting companies was overcome last week when “differences were bridged with the Minister of Agriculture (Javier Ponce).”
