Saraguro indigenous detainees were released
On Tuesday regained their freedom 25 of the 26 arrested on August 17, during the clashes between indigenous protesters and members of the police and armed forces.
The Court of Justice of Loja issued on Monday night the alternative measures requested by lawyers, so that instead of preventive detention, the 25 indigenous will have to appear every week before the judge. Only one of them, Cesar G., will remain detained.
According to lawyers, the permanence of Cesar G. in custody is due to inconsistency in the submission of the detainee´s documents. During the day they will try to regularize the documentation so he can be released.

Carlos Perez Guartambel, president of the Ecuarunari, accompanied the Saraguro community in vigil for the release of the detainees. “The indigenous movement is beginning to lose fear, and even when they are looking to imprison us, put us in jail, people are willing to keep fighting (…). It may be that a battle is sometimes lost but not the war, the resistance continues.”
