Security is reinforced in Guayaquil after the alleged escape of ‘Fito’, leader of the Choneros

Following the events that occurred yesterday in Guayaquil regarding the alleged evasion of alias ‘Fito’, leader of the Choneros, the Municipality of Guayaquil decided to reinforce security. Mayor Aquiles Álvarez decided to deploy members of Segura EP and the Guayaquil Transit and Mobility Agency (ATM) at strategic points.

On his X social network account, Álvarez wrote: “In the face of the national security crisis, we have put our operational plan into action. The municipal contingent is in full mobilization with vehicles, control and surveillance agents activated.”

The Mayor of Guayaquil also announced that they will work together with the central government to “support the country at any time it is required.” It was also reported that there are 100 municipal control agents who work jointly with the Police.

In a video published along with the Mayor’s announcement, it is noted that 83 mobile units have been distributed at strategic points in the city. In addition, ATM agents carry out control operations on the roads.

Last night, Police Commander César Zapata reported that the whereabouts of alias ‘Fito’, who remained in the Guayaquil Regional Prison, were unknown. Since yesterday afternoon, January 7, 2024, an operation was carried out in that detention center.

At night, a session of the State and Public Security Council (COSEPE) took place, after which it was confirmed that the location of the inmate was unknown. The security entities of the central government are deployed to locate alias ‘Fito’.    

The Municipality of Guayaquil also reported: ” In the context of insecurity, we have reinforced preventive controls with elite groups, vans, and constant monitoring with our video surveillance cameras in the city.”
