SIP pronounces against Ecuador, Venezuela and Cuba
“It can not be possible that the rulers remain unmoved by this situation. America is not in the position of Nicolas Maduro, or Rafael Correa, nor Raul Castro,” said Gustavo Mohme, president of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), in statements to EFE, and urged to denounce the outrage against freedom of expression that currently exists today in Ecuador, Venezuela, and Cuba at the VII Summit of the Americas.
“This is a historic opportunity to, once and for all, make decisions and not remain impassive before this situation,” said Mohme regarding the censure of the press in the afore mentioned countries. He also recalled that there are three journalists imprisoned in Cuba, while in Venezuela, information is being manipulated by the government.
He denounced in the same way the media lynching of the independent press in Ecuador by president Rafael Correa himself, during the transmission of his weekly addresses. So he stood up for “the restoration of freedom spaces.”
