Snowden extension of requests asylum in Russia
The former analyst of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) Edward Snowden, asked Russia to extend for one year the temporary asylum which was granted on August,1, 2013, confirmed today his lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.
“There is a procedure stipulated by Russian law. We follow this procedure for temporary asylum. Valid through July 31, 2014. Therefore we have delivered the Federal Migration Service (FMS, for its acronym in Russian) the documents to extend his stay in Russia,” Kucherena told reporters.
The document did not specify which status Snowden has requested for asylum in Russia, if it is an extension of temporary stay or a residence permit. He said, however, that the application was filed in the FMS office of the Moscow region.
Snowden arrived in Moscow on June 23, 2013, fleeing the U.S. Justice, after revealing that he was the source of the revelations published by “The Washington Post” and “The Guardian” on a massive and scandalous communications espionage plot at international level by USA.
