During 2015, a difficult year for the economy, according to the Central Bank, there were some higher expenses than in 2014. Especially the payment of salaries of the public sector.

The Central Government -the Presidency, secretariats and ministries- spent 8.761 million dollars in the wages of the bureaucracy during 2015. The previous year, these reached 8.359 million. $ 402 million less.

During his weekly address No. 461, President Rafael Correa announced that the government will provide job cuts in the public sector. He did not explain, however, the increase detected in the expenditure.

What he did say is that the bulk is in education, health and security. Before the citizens’ revolution, according to Correa, there were 398,000 public servants. Now there are 487,000. That is, 22% more. Of the increase, “26,328 employees are in education, 31,407 in health, 9,431 in the Police, 10,219 in the judiciary and 10,031 in social welfare.”
