Statements of a possible output of Ecuador from the CAN worries employers
Business representatives reacted with concern yesterday after President Rafael Correa indicated on Tuesday in Guayaquil that the continuity of the country in the Andean Community (CAN) should be “seriously considered.”
Blasco Peñaherrera, head of the Chamber of Commerce of Quito, said in a statement that to leaving the subregional organization “would be a blunder.”
He argued that the body has generated since its creation, more than $ 20 billion in trade among the Andean countries.
Francisco Alarcon, President of the Chamber of Industries of Guayaquil, said in an interview to EcuadorTV: “If Ecuador leaves the CAN and the manufacturing products, especially Ecuadorians, which today enter the Colombian and Peruvian markets without tariffs, begin to pay, the Ecuadorian producer and the jobs he produces would be the ones harmed.”
