Stranded ship in Galapagos is removed
The Galapaface I, a cargo ship that ran aground on May 9 in the Galapagos Islands, was refloated and removed from the marine reserve yesterday, according to the Galapagos National Park (GNP).
The ship was towed to a point situated 20 miles east off the marine reserve of the islands, where it will be sunk 2,500 feet depth, so that “the effect on the marine biodiversity of the islands is void,” said the park management .
“In an operation never before recorded in the archipelago, the removement of the Galapaface cargo ship was achieved, which was lying on the seabed near Punta Carola in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal Island”, said a PNG release.
After this, inspections of the seabed where the ship has been stranded for more than two months will be carried out “to determine the caused impact “.
