The young people who walk the aisle of “The City of Knowledge” are the first residents of the “educational megaproject” of the Central Government that trains scientific researchers and opened its doors on March 31, 2014.

They are on the top of high school graduates who obtained the best grades in the National Examination for Higher Education (ENES).

In its first year and a half of management, the research university of experimental technology Yachay Tech grew significantly. In infrastructure, the number of buildings, laboratories and green spaces was multiplied; students went from 174 to 820; and its academic staff is made up of 74 professors, both Ecuadorian and foreign, in relation with the 52 professors who started the project. However, not everything has been brilliant.

The Yachay brand was tangled up four months ago in a controversy over alleged high travel allowances for the benefit of three members of the Management Commission; by expensive consultancies and controversial plans to redesign the campus. One of the results was the departure of president Fernando Albericio. Some officials refuse to discuss these issues. Today they are a kind of taboo.
