Superintendency of communications sanctions El Universo and Bonil
Posted On 03 Feb 2014
A fine to EL UNIVERSO newspaper equivalent to 2% of the average turnover of the last three months, was the sanction established by the Superintendence of Information and Communication for the publication of a cartoon created by Xavier Bonilla, known as Bonil, who also received the order to rectify the publication within 72 hours.
The caricatures, published on December 28, referred to the raid on the home of the exassemblyman Fernando Villavicencio.
The Superintendent, in his resolution, argued that the sanction to the newspaper was “by not refrain from taking an institutional position on the innocence or guilt of a person who is involved in the preliminary investigation referred to in the cartoon and the text of the same”.
Also expressed that regarding the cartoon “the statement that makes its contents does not correspond to the reality of the facts and stigmatizes the action of both the Prosecutor’s Office and the Judicial Police”.
The rectification has to be with the same characteristics, dimensions, in the same space and section.
