Posted On 26 Jun 2017
Ecuadornews:
Tarsicio Granizo (55) is the Minister of Environment. An environmentalist, he promoted the Yasuní-ITT initiative in the previous government and has been linked to NGOs in the area.
Q: Did the Yasuní-ITT initiative fail?
A: In the end yes because there were no resources offered by the industrialized countries.
Q: Is there any way to get it back?
A: It is very difficult.
Q: What are the main lines to be implemented?
A: We will consolidate the conservation of our National System of Protected Areas, to improve environmental quality, but one of the central issues we want to promote is the bio-economy, ie how biodiversity and natural resources can be inserted into the productive matrix, making sustainable, scientific and technical use of the natural resources.
Q: What does that mean?
A: We are going to start betting on biotechnology, where elements of biodiversity become products that can be used by the population or exported. (I)
