From 20:30 to 21:30, environmental organizations and public and private businesses turned off their lights to promote this initiative. The Earth Hour began in Sydney, where its iconic Opera House and the Bay Bridge were plunged into darkness. The next few hours was the turn of Ecuador, and several cities were well-disposed to stop illuminating some of their monuments.
The lights of facades and domes of several churches of the Historic Center of Quito, a World Cultural Heritage, were off for one hour as a symbolic demonstration, reported the NGO Global Fund for Nature (WWF) Ecuador in a statement.
