The IRS ‘chases’ private universities

Posted On 04 Sep 2017

Ecuadornews:

Private universities expressed their dissatisfaction before a possible persecution by the Internal Revenue Service. The situation went so far that a public manifesto was published yesterday, in which the universities request the intervention of President Lenin Moreno.
The text, signed by the presidents of ten universities, is backed by statements by of former legislator Christian Viteri, who asserts that at the end of the government of Rafael Correa, certain legislators of the Alianza PAIS Party suggested going against private universities as a way to eclipse the corruption scandal in Petroecuador.
They accuse the IRS of trying to strip private schools of their tax exemptions and demand the payment of million-dollar taxes. “In doing so, this body ignores the Constitution and Organic Law of Higher Education (LOES), which establishes tax exemptions to non-profit institutions,” the text reads.
